I have LO 3.4.3 installed on my Windows 7 system. I want to keep this version as I have a spreadsheet with a ton of macros and it works perfectly in this version. I have tried it in newer versions and the very complex spreadsheet and macros fail. So I am fine with keeping 3.4.3 for use with this specific spreadsheet.

However, I want to also install LO 5.1 on the same computer because customers send me Microsoft Publisher files, and I see that LO 5.1 can open them with ease, whereas 3.4.3 does not.

I have read that other users have multiple installs of LO on the same computer, but I get an error (see attached) This error seems to think that LO 3.4.3 is open, but nothing in the task manager, I have rebooted, not opened anything. I have even gone so far as to remove the “Quickstarter” from the installation of 3.4.3 and also deselect this option from 5.1.

I do see that my LO 3.4.3 is in its aptly named folder in Programs(x86) and the LO 5.1 is in its corresponding name, so this is not an issue of installing in the same folder.

So I am stumped. Can anyone shed any advice on how to achieve this?

Yes
This is possible (and early developer versions always install ‘in parallel’ to an existing LibO). The details will depend on the OS (yours is Win 7, I know). Please refer to this wiki page.

(For Win users:)
I personally have a true lot of versions at hand. This for “historical interests” and for backing my contributions rto the forums. However, I never install “in parallel” (except for now and then a developer version), but use the vesrsions distributed in the PortableApps format (.paf.exe). These packages are self-extracting archives and do not need an installation. Simply expand to an empty folder. That’s all.

(For Linux users:)
A few years ago my experiments (using a Ubuntu flavour) showed .paf.exe packages also to correctly expand under Linux/Wine. LibreOffice worked with sufficient speed using Wine, too. I do not know the current situation to any detail.

(Concerning Portable versions:)
The .paf.exe packages are available via this PortableApps page or from this location maintained by the The Document Foundation itself. (Don’t worry about the “old”.) There is a slight delay for new versions to be packaged as portable apps. Presently the most recent portable version is 5.0.4.

Currently installed: LibO V5.1.2 on Windows 10

This is just an additional note. It is now much easier to run a Windows distributable (executable) under GNU/Linux thanks to tdf#87743 .

Separate install GUI
It’s possible to install several versions at time with the Separate Install GUI, developed by Florian Reissinger, downloadable from http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/si-gui/, download and run the setup.exe file, and it lets to download and install the desired version.

He is developing a java version, for all OS.

For Mac OSX users:It is
For Mac OSX users: It is possible installing more versions of LO without problems. But they share the same user profile (folder “4” for 4.x e 5.x versions) and you can launch them one at time.

I have not looked at a MacOS install for some time, however is there a LibreOffice.app/program/bootstraprc that can be edited to change the user profile path? As per the wiki page instructions under GNU/Linux I routinely edit /5 to (for example) /5122 to more clearly illustrate version and allow parallel execution without issue.

Again mentioning the portable versions
As I alredy hinted to the portable versions in this context:

An installer packaged in the PortableAppsFormat unpacked to its specific location, say RelativeRoot, will establish there also its specific user profile as RelativeRoot\Data\settings\user .

In addition you can edit RelativeRoot\App\AppInfo\Launcher\LibreOfficePortable.ini appending

SingleAppInstance=false

to the (first) section [Launch] to allow for the creation of a LibO (soffice.exe) instance in parallel to an already running one.

Also refer the remarks concerning different (from Win) OS in comment #1 (Lupp) and in comment #3 (oweng).

The PortableApps site is naming as system requirements:

External Site wrote:
System Requirements: Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7/8/10 and Wine under Linux/UNIX/BSD/Mac OS X

Refering the WinHQ site concerning Mac OS X this should apply to V10.8 and higher.
