[2016-05-24] LibreOfficeForum.org is shutting down
Well, LibreOfficeForum.org has been in operation since September, 2010. It was created due to the lack of an official support option during the initial creation of the LibreOffice project. Since then, the LibreOffice project has created two excellent options for official support.
Additionally, this site is built around the Drupal 6 content management system. Drupal 6 is no longer supported for security updates, and needs to be updated to the next major version 7. Unfortunately, my experience with other Drupal 6 —> Drupal 7 site upgrades indicates that the upgrade process will be extremely difficult and time consuming, and will be further complicated by the multi-lingual aspect of LibreOfficeForum.org. The worst part is that the final product will have slightly reduced functionality and new bugs that are not being handled by Drupal and its add-on components that are necessary for good forum functionality.
In view of the two above factors, and after serious consideration to the matter, I have decided to shut down LibreOfficeForum.org. This is not a decision I have taken lightly, but I feel it is the right one for me and for the rest of the community. If anybody is interested in taking it over, please contact me via private message. Otherwise, it will be shutting down in two weeks from the date of this post.
My sincere thanks goes out to everyone who has been a part of LibreOfficeForum.org. Best regards!
charlie
I would like to thank you (as I am sure would many others) for administering the excellent LibreOfficeForum.org. As a contributor over many years to the BASE section, I have learned a lot and enjoyed the challenge of contributing to the many and diverse questions posed by LibreOffice Forum users.
As a reference source, I believe the LibreOffice Forum is invaluable, and it would be a pity if all the content was ‘lost’ when the forum is shut down in the near future.
I wonder if there a possibility that the content of the forum could be somehow preserved and made available as a reference source of information for LibreOffice Users?
As suggested by charlie above, migrating the forum to another (more secure?) platform would ensure that the valuable resource of LibreOfficeForum.org is not lost, and I wonder if this a possibility? Perhaps there is some other way of making the content available online (even if the forum is closed for new posts)?
MERCI.
À bientôt … peut-être.
It will be useful for LibreOffice users to know that OpenOffice Forum also supports LibreOffice. If this can somehow be communicated to visitors to this site after it is closed, they will get yet another resource for LibreOffice support.
God Bless You!
Ciao
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend’s or of thine own were: any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee.
The community of LibreOffice users owes a great deal to sb73542 for providing all of us the opportunity to share – giving and receiving. Oweng has eloquently spoken for us.
this is a sad day, as I am just getting used to the functions of libre office calc and how they work, I have had many many people here help me out with my questions and for that I am truly appreciative words can not explain my sadness.
I do wish you the very best for the future, and can only hope that maybe someone could take over and keep this site going. maybe a team effort of people to assist with the continued support of this site would be a thought.
once again best wishes for the future and your next endeavour.
Thanks again for your support.
First, I’d like to clarify that it’s not that Drupal is less secure than other platforms; as a matter of fact it has a much better security record than the likes of phpBB. However, they stopped reviewing the code and offering security fixes for the version that we are running here. And upgrades to the next version of Drupal are ridiculously difficult and problematic, and the next version has major bugs that are not present in this old version.
Probably the best solution would be to use a tool like https://www.httrack.com/ to “scrape” this site, and then post the static files to a service like Google drive.
