Hi there,

This is really frustrating,
cell(L10) = 10
cell(L11) = 11
if I do
=SUM the answer is 21

Cell (E10) = 10
Cell (E11) = 11

=SUM = 0 Both are formatted to “number”

Can anyone tell me what is going on here please?

Which macro? Can you upload your macro code here?
Maybe the macro adjusts the Cell string instead of the cell value…

Oh yes, the help files are filled with how to spot bugs and quirks of applications, yes, I work for a car manufacturer and we often put in the user manual which parts of the car will fail due to being missed in development. Yes yes really, all information is out there, that’s why no one ever actually needs help with anything, we just come on here to wind you lot up who are so dedicated to your cause!!

Have a word with yourself! If you don’t like helping people to find a solution to a problem, don’t go to places that are designed for it!

iFunction, you are an user
iFunction, you are an user of the open source applications. When you installed the applications you have accepted, that there is no full free support, there is no guarantee. You MUST learn the usage of the AOO/LO applications, and if you want use some macros, then you MUST study and use the API functions. There is no another way. The HELP will help you if you read it. The descriptions of the API functions will help you, if you are familiar with the object oriented programming.

I find this is not the case I
I find this is not the case I have just spent some hours trying to find out how to call a function from a button click. after 3 hours, I have not yet found one source of information that tells me how I am supposed to pass a variable back and forth from it. In all the other programming languages that I have found, it is easy. This is not!

I just don’t get it, I often go on the python forum, the excel forum, the Linux Questions forum, and they are all really helpful there, why the abuse here I just don’t get it!

Two more points, no I am not that familiar with OOP and I am also severely dyslexic which makes getting information out of reading somewhat stressful. If you don’t want to help, just don’t respond, but don’t purposely upset someone for asking for help, the chances are they are already at their wits end. It’s a bit like going to the doctor and being told off for having a heart attack. There are plenty of flaming sites on line for upsetting people, maybe the openoffice forum is more friendly.

Oopsss! How you will read and understand our helping texts??? Laughing out loud Wink
I just kidding…

But:
There are tutorial videos on the YouTube, if the lots of programming examples (code snippets) and descriptions of this Forum (and the AOO forum) can not help you.

There are descriptions for the programming, and for the API:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/images/archive/9/9a/20130215221733!GS4013-GettingStartedWithMacros.pdf
http://api.libreoffice.org/
and more others…

Install and use the Xray Tool or the MRI. These tools help you to understand the properties and methods of the objects of the LibreOffice.
Download and read the Andrew Pitonyak’s books. That is a Start point for you.

Just a factual statement
I try to avoid the usage of “macros” as a rule for many good reasons, but sometimes I have to use a Sub or a side effect of a Function to change the content of a cell. Recent LibreOffice is less restrictive with this respect than its predecessors. A sheet trying this calling a Function placed in a cell on the same sheet will not work as expected, however, when opened with AOO, which still is restrictive. This is one of the reasons to avoid such constructs. (Interference with interoperability.)

If I successfully changed a cell’s content by “macro”, I never got a case where a content of type ‘Number’ (oCell.Type=1), or content type Formula (oCell.Type=3) and oCell.FormulaResultType=1, not was recognised as a number by SUM. If the Type=2 or the Type=3 and FormulaResultType=2, SUM will find ‘Text’ and will ignore the cell, as specifications require.

(A ‘Numbers’ format defined for a cell or its style respectively will not convert an actually input text into a number, even if it looks like a number. To get it converted after it was entered as a text, you have to trigger a recognition process. This may apply to a cell having got its content by a “macro” we don’t know.)

Thanks for your help, but I
Thanks for your help, but I have looked through all of these and not found necessarily what it is that I am looking for, unfortunately you have rather frightened me off posting on here now, so I hope to god I don’t have to deal with open office again after I have written this little app. I was really hoping that python was compatible, as I was going to use TKinter to do what I needed to do, but Tkinter is not supported, and making the program in python and having it open an open office spreadsheet to then paste in is extremely inefficient, as it is simply data entry in an extremely busy environment, usually I use the user input forms of Excel. Unfortunately a Raspberry Pi will not run Excel, so I am stuck now.

The resources you give me don’t give me any of the detail of which I am used to and rely on and I am not allowed to ask for help. I am sucessfully converted to the Libre Office is useless club as part of an open source project is the people who make it happen.

I’m very disappointed, I do not feel at all welcome here.

You say “I am not allowed ask for help”. Rubbish! You can of course ask for help and you will find it will be offered, but know that all the help on the Forum comes from volunteers in their own time; there are limits to how much time any person is prepared to devote to a particular case.

A general rule is that volunteers do not write complete code for individual cases; make some effort yourself, then post some code and seek help in clarifying it.
