…empty image boxes that have image(numbers) in the upper left corner. When I left click on the image(number)in the upper left corner of the otherwise empty image box, I get a 10 tab popup box that is open to the 5th tab (“Image”). A thumbnail image of the image that is missing in the document is present in the right side of the popup box. I have played with the “Image” tab options to try to restore the image in the document, but I have had no joy.

I remember having the same problem years before and fixing it somehow, or maybe installing a newer LO version fixed the problem. I don’t remember what caused the old image problem to go away.

Is this a common problem with LO Writer? Any advice on what to do?

Advice and comments much appreciated.

An added observation:
When I opened a new odt file, when I copied and pasted the empty image box from the problematic odt file onto a page in the new odt file, the image appeared as it was before the problem occurred. Also other odt files that contain other PNG bitmap images are not affected.

Now, this.

Whereas before, the problematic odt was the only LO odt file affected by the aforementioned image loss, I now find all of the odt files on my “Recent Documents” tab are effected.

Previously, thinking a memory leak might be to blame, I shut down and then rebooted my PC, and opened fewer programs. Not only did that shut down and reboot not fix my original problem, now my original problem has spread to other LO odt files.

What’s going on?

I tried to copy an image with the snipping tool (to get a .png bitmap) and then paste it in a new odt file. That doesn’t work as it did a couple of days ago. I am now downloading LO 5.0.5.2 in hopes the newer version will cure the problem.

I downloaded and installed LO 5.0.5.2 to no avail. The bitmap images are still missing from the image boxes.

By the way, when I download and install a new version of LO, can I safely delete old LO downloads, or should they be kept on my hard drive for some reason?

Hi, from your initial
Hi, from your initial description it really sounds like only the display of the images is turned off. In the menu “View” look for “graphics” or “show graphics” or sth like.

Greets

You were right. Under “View”, I found “hide images” toggled “on” so I toggled it off and my images came back on.

No idea how the hide images switch got toggled on or how it was toggled on for one file several days ago and then apparently toggled on for all of my odt files a day later. Very strange. I may have to retoggle all of my pictured odt files which would be a pain, but far better than recapturing a great number of unsaved bitmaps.

Thanks for your help.

Dubina, I also experienced
Dubina, I also experienced that sometimes this graphic view switch gets turned on by itself, in libre and openoffice. Don’t know the reason. But I think this is an application setting and not a document setting, so chances are that you don’t have to set it for each single document. Test if it stays on if you load your other documents.

If the image hide toggle switch is an application setting (and it looks like all of my odt files that have images are now OK, so probably you are right about that) then why did I have only one document with that problem at first and many other documents, maybe all other documents, seemingly not affected?

Very strange behavior.

I didn’t know about the image hide toggle switch. What is its purpose?
