Limit on the number of Page Styles?

Is there a limit on the number of Page Styles I can use in a document? I am putting together a compendium of short stories – about 30 in all – and wanted to have a different header for each story. I got to about 20, when I started to find that changing Page style altered the style in the preceding story. A style can be created and appears on the list (say storyx), but when applied to Story x, I look back and see that the headers have been changed on Story x-1 and the style is now storyx for that story.
I have tried all combinations, including the Next Style, but nothing works.
Help!

no limit
There should not be any limit on the number of page styles. It is more likely a definition / application issue. Are hard or soft (next style) page breaks being used?

Re: Limit on the number of Page Styles?
You probably don’t need different page styles. You can change the heading on an existing page style without changing it on all instances of the page style. See

Use fields
Don’t enter the story title in the header, but format the header as Heading 1, then use the chapter title field in the header and you won’t need more than one or two page styles.
I don’t understand the reference to a soft break.
